Hair Mishap. Talk about biiiiiiig mistake

This is going to be short. Anyway, Saturday was washday for me, and I decided to deep condition because my hair needed it. I’d not properly moisturized my hair in days and it was feeling extremely dry and forgotten. So I detangled  my hair (not carefully, which was my first mistake), and stepped into the bathroom to wash off the product buildup. Used shampoo (another mistake), and stepped out to apply my deep conditioning mix. After putting on the hair therapy wrap and allowing my hair to soak in the goodness, I stepped into the bathroom for another wash. Now here’s where the big mistake comes in. I did the black tea rinse, rinsed, then did the ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) rinse and that was where the biggest mistake of the day happened. I got distracted with the rinse in my hair and ended up leaving it in for 20 mins (instead of the standard and widely advised 3 minutes). When I was free, I rinsed, conditioned, rinsed again, soaked up the moisture with an old tee, then tried applying oil to the scalp. This was when I realized what I’d done. The 20 mins ACV soak had stripped my hair of all moisture :(. I mean it was so bad you could feel the static. What the hell had I done? I tried recovering by spritzing with water then styling my hair in flexi rods, so it can be ready for work on Monday.

Was chatting with my best friend this morning and told her what happened, when she confirmed what I’d known but was trying to avoid doing. I needed to recondition my hair to restore moisture. When she said so, I nodded, then prepared a hot oil treatment. Applied my mix of Coconut, Olive and Avocado oil to my hair, until she was soaking with it, put on a plastic wrap, then the hair therapy wrap to administer heat to the strands. 40 minutes later, I was back in the bathroom. This time around, I cowashed with Nature Vital conditioner, which my hair loved, and absorbed its goodness, rinsed, applied my black tea and ACV rinse (but stayed within the time frame this time around), then conditioned with Giovanni’s deep moisture conditioner. When I stepped out of the bathroom and ran my fingers through the strands, I shouted an hallelujah. My hair was back to being well moisturized and oh so soft (whew). That was a close call.

Hair in Flexi Rods
Hair in Flexi Rods

Did a 3 inch trim (big deal since it was the first trim I’ve done since I started transitioning and I think I took off more hair than I should have 😦 )and then put my hair in flexi rods. I used 29 rods in total, and a mix of the two colours so I will probably have a mix of big and small curls. Did them late this afternoon so I’m really hoping they get dry before tomorrow morning so I can rock the curls to work :).

Anyway, that was my hair mishap. Figured it would be a good idea to document it. Just remember that whilst transitioning, you are discovering what works for your hair and what doesn’t. A setback is simply a learning opportunity to fix whatever went wrong and acquire new knowledge that can be useful some time in the future. So now, I have knowledge of a workable deep conditioning mix for when my hair is in dire need of moisture, a moisturizing conditioner to use as a cowash, and the reason why ACV should not be left in for too long. See? Quite a lot to learn in one Sunday isn’t it. Everything is a learning curve ;).

Grey’s Season Finale. She’s Gone. She’s Gone. Oh Christina is Gone.

orAnd like that, my first female love in television series is… gone. God, it feels like I’ve lost my best friend. The no-nonsense person who’s always got my back. Sandra Oh! You are brilliant. Not just because you’re my namesake (Yup. I believe Sandra’s rock worldwide. Our names do not mean the freaking defender of mankind for nothing duh! Lol), but because you made me fall totally in love with a beautiful character who became totally real to me. I mean, just in case you haven’t figured it yet, I LOVE CHRISTINA YANG!!!

Braids, Braidouts and Getting into the Process of Working my Hair

Like I said in my last hair post, I’ve never styled my hair before. It’s always easier to just go to the salon and have the hairdresser worry about it. I did spend final year deep conditioning and washing my hair myself, but actually styling it? I have never done that. So, the fact that since I started my transitioning, most of my styles have been ones that I’ve pulled off by watching Youtube channels and reading blogs, is a thing of great pride for me. IMG_20140505_083937

Take this braidouts for example:  I was so excited when I successfully took out the braids and got this look. It perfectly blends my two textures and neither I nor my friends can tell my natural hair from my relaxed ends apart. And the best part? It’s long lasting, you don’t need to comb it every day and it’s a very good protective style. Wins points on all sides for me :D.

How to Get the Perfect Braidouts

You’ll need:

  • A clean scalp. I’ll advice, deep conditioning, shampooing, conditioning and oiling your scalp with a bit of scalp massage thrown in before starting the braids. A clean scalp is a fresh palate and you can get the most from any style this way.
  • Fingers or a wide toothed comb for parting your hair into sections. I tend to use my fingers because I wanted the hair to have a more messy, not so defined look.
  • A leave in conditioner to apply from root to ends.
  • Oil to seal in the moisture
  • A spritzer with water for damping the hair should it get dry mid braiding.
  • And finally, time and patience to make the braids and take them down. Usually, I work with my hair whilst watching my favourite shows. Doing that just makes me calm down and makes the time fly by. So, learn to work with your hair while doing what you like. It  helps. A lot. Trust me ;).

Bring Back Our Girls Change Petition.

urlHello everybody. I know some of you might know this, and some of you might not, but I am a Nigerian, living in Nigeria. I’ve lived in this beautiful country of my birth and heritage since I was born, and I am proud to say that I am a Nigerian because my country is full of beautiful people, with amazing minds, the strength to get through terrible times and the fortitude to keep going even when the odds are against us. There are as much good in this country as there are bad, and even though sometimes I weep for my country, I will still keep hoping and doing everything that I can to make my country a better place.

Almost four weeks ago, a militant group, referred to as Boko Haram terrorized the small community of Chibok in Borno State and kidnapped over 300 girls between the ages of 16-18 from their boarding school, put them on a bus and drove off with them. What was their crime? They were in school, trying to write the WAEC examinations, and Boko Haram believes that women shouldn’t be educated, but should be married, and spend their days having sex with their husbands, taking care of the home and birthing babies. The leader of the sect has come out to say that he will sell the girls because there is a market for them and Allah has commanded him to sell them.

This terrifies me. They are children! Little girls who enjoy learning, who want to learn new things. They shouldn’t be punished for that! To take them away and force them to live under brutal conditions is wrong.

Now, I know naturally, the duty of bringing our girls back falls in the hands of the nation’s Government. But so far, our Government hasn’t brought them back. And every day that passes is one more day for these girls to be raped, beaten, shipped off to marry people they do not want to marry or even killed!

There has been an international outcry for the rest of the world to help us bring them back, and the movement has been going strong, for which I am grateful. Now there is a petition on asking for the help of world leaders in putting an end to this and bringing the girls home. I have signed it and the girls, the family of the girls and the rest of the nation and the world who care will be extremely grateful if you could sign it and let others know about the petition.

A proverb says that little drops make a mighty ocean. Signing this petition would be a little drop that together can cause a tidal wave that would help rescue this girls. Please do this for them.

Thank you.

On the Leaving of Christina Yang and Why I’m at Peace with it.

Disclaimer: My Series review will contain a lot of spoilers. If you don’t want to know about episodes until you’ve watched them, then don’t read. Read only if you like spoilers or have seen the episode already. These are my thoughts about the episode and my predictions.

Nope. Christina hasn’t left yet. Now we all know that she didn’t renew her contract for after the tenth season and so this season is her last. I was wondering how Shonda was going to write her out. We all know Shonda’s perchance for killing off characters.

Yup. That was me.
Yup. That was me.

Remember Lexi and Mark anyone?

Anyway, I was worried and praying like hell and after this last episode, I breathed a sigh of relief. Yup, there was hope. Things were alright and Christina would survive. She would still leave though, but with the story that Shonda is writing, I am okay with her leaving.

Falling in Love With Spurs

If there’s anything I’m appreciative of, it’s good food. And if there’s one thing that makes good food even better, it’s enjoying good food in an aesthetically pleasing environment. And that is what you get when you dine at Seven Eagles Spur restaurant at Ikeja City Mall: Great food, great atmosphere equals Yum. Yum.

April was one hell of a month for me. From the first day of the month to the last day, it was crazy, insane and I loved every minute of it (*cue in my slightly workaholic persona). But in as much as I loved the month, I also felt that I deserved a treat. So, off I went to the mall yesterday to treat myself.

Now how do I describe Seven Eagles. Think cozy, intimate, South American themed with great food that is super affordable and amazing service. Seriously? Doesn’t this look promising?

Seven Eagles Spurs. Culled from foursquare. Looks Amazing doesn't it?
Seven Eagles Spurs. Culled from foursquare. Looks Amazing doesn’t it?

With a wide range of dishes (their specialty are their Mexican dishes, their steak, their burgers and their deserts. Oh my God!), Spurs is definitely my go-to place in the mall whenever I’m in the mood for a treat.

So, to help myself, I ordered a meal of Fajita with chicken filling. The filling of peppers, tomatoes, onions, and chicken was sizzling hot (seriously, you could hear the sizzle as they placed the dish in front of you, straight from the fire), and the tortillas were so crispy. Put in the filling, layer it with tomatoes and you have a meal that would make you moan :g. Or at least I moaned (Yeah. I’m the girl that makes love to her food. Blame Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love. She turned me into this wanton foodie ;)). The food was that good. I got so carried away, I was halfway done before I remembered to take a picture. See? Now doesn’t that look gorgeous?

Chicken Fajita. Hmmmm. Yummy.
Chicken Fajita. Utterly delicious!

After I finished with my Fajita, I ordered desert, their Log Cabin Waffle. Oh My God :G! I’d died and gone to food heaven. That desert was heavenly. Men would compose Odes to it. Hell I feel an Ode coming on right now. How I love you O Log Cabin Waffle. Let me count thy ways. Thou drizzle with syrup, entice with cream, destroy with thy taste and bring me to my knees with their gooey decadent texture. There should be a religion dedicated to that desert. I mean, look at that picture.

Spurs' Log Cabin Waffle. Talk about a foodgasm :g.
Spurs’ Log Cabin Waffle. Talk about a foodgasm :G.

Doesn’t that do things to you? And to make things even better, it tastes way better than it looks. Yummy :D!

And guess what (Here’s the best part)? That Fajita with the waffle and a bottle of water (I was swimming in enough calories as it is), all cost ₦3,780. Yup You heard me. ₦3,780 for a meal that had me stuffed better than Christmas lunch. I told you it was affordable :D.

Lying witches, confused demon and tortured soul. Kuroshitsuji Chapter 92 rocks!

Disclaimer: Be warned. My manga and anime reviews will always be filled with spoilers. Read if you want to know what’s happening. And if you would like more information about a particular manga or anime that I review or that you want me to review, holla and let me know.

Okay, I love Yana. I adore her. She’s one of my favorite mangakas ever cuz she keeps changing things and each chapter has me going huh? Right now, she’s really close to kicking Tite Kubo off my number one spot. Considering that there were no new chapters of Bleach or Naruto released yesterday, well, it’s easier for Yana to maintain this elevated position. For those of you who believe Masashi and Kubo are the ultimate, well, :P.
